SPORTS - HOCKEY - SLEDGE HOCKEY
INDIVIDUALS ORGANISATIONS PRODUCTS | "I now see hockey in black and white, says Karen Blachford, and I love the view. Read how Blachford transitioned from playing junior sledge-hockey with the Huron Sledgehawks to becoming the first paraplegic to referee an able-bodied hockey game. I'm proud to have earned my stripes, she says, and it's a privilege to wear them. I realize that my accomplishment is good for all people with disabilities. We have to work hard to achieve our goals in an able-bodied world, but I know it can be done. People with disabilities simply don't have to sit on the sidelines". |
| The BSHA is looking to not only develop the sport across the country and bring what's said to be 'The greatest disabled team sport on earth'; in to ice arenas across the country, but also fund the international team and help the cream of the sport achieve fantastic goals at international level.

| Ice sled hockey (called sledge hockey outside the USA) was invented at a Stockholm, Sweden rehabilitation center in the early 1960s by a group of Swedes who, despite their physical impairment, wanted to continue playing hockey. The men modified a metal frame sled, or sledge, with two regular-sized ice hockey skate blades that allowed the puck to pass underneath. Using round poles with bike handles for sticks, the men played without any goaltenders on a lake south of Stockholm. |
