HELEN SMITH & LISA EDMONDS - EL CAMINO PILGRIMAGE 636 views Europe
People have walked the Camino for over 1000 years, traditionally motivated by religion, however, modern day pilgrims like ourselves embark on such an adventure to immerse ourselves in nature and reflect upon, and appreciate, the simplicity of life. For us, two women in wheelchairs, tackling the Camino de Santiago will present its own set of unique challenges: we will be travelling solo through remote and rural places along tracks that are not considered ‘accessible’ by standard definitions. We will have to adapt our travel to match weather conditions and local terrain, and come up with innovative ways to overcome barriers such as gates, hills, mud patches and rocks. We want to challenge ourselves and push our mental and physical stamina beyond and above in order to demonstrate the power of passion and determination in making absolutely anything possible. We will be completely self-sufficient carrying our own belongings on our back and will be staying at albergues (hostels) during the evenings. We will not be pre-booking any accommodation, allowing for the journey to take its own freedom of pace and course and not be bound by everyday deadlines. Let the adventure begin!

KYLE MAYNARD 1962 views USA
Kyle Maynard is a motivational speaker, bestselling author, entrepreneur, and ESPY award-winning mixed martial arts athlete, known for becoming the first quadruple amputee to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Aconcagua without the aid of prosthetics. Oprah Winfrey called Kyle one of the most inspiring young men you will ever hear about. Arnold Schwarzenegger described him as the real deal,a champion human, and one of the most inspiring people he has ever met. Even the great Wayne Gretzky has spoken of Kyle's greatness. Despite being born with a rare condition known as congenital amputation, that has left him with arms that end at the elbows and legs that end near his knees, he learned early on with the support of his family, to live life independently and without prosthetics. Kyle thrives on physical challenges and following a few rough middle school football seasons; he went on to become a champion wrestler, CrossFit Certified Instructor and gym owner, competitive MMA/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter, world record-setting weightlifter, and skilled mountaineer.

PUSHWALK 1185 views AUST
I started this blog from the frustration of how little info there is for manual wheelchair users going bush. This is not a know-all-see-all information site, but rather a collection of trip reports giving a sense of what worked for me. Take everything with a grain of salt! Sites change, tracks differ and condition will vary in the future. This is simply a record of what worked for me at the time. I hope it may be useful to help others plan some of their adventures!

S'JEES EXTREME SKIING ON-LINE 2428 views USA
(See also S'JEES outdoors/bush access photos too...) In March 2001 I had a snowboard accident and broke my back. Now I'm paralysed from the waist down. Before this time I've always been in-line skating, snowboarding, skateboarding, and wakeboarding. Because my passion to do these sports is so big I started looking for a way to do my sports in an alternative way. The accident could not stop me from moving my borders. I find the most challenges in skiing and wakeboarding

VASILE STOICA'S PAN-EUROPEAN (WHEELCHAIR) TREK 1931 views Europe
On 10 2006 September Vasile Stoica completed a grueling summer-long Pan-European trek, alone and using only the push power of his hands in a manual wheelchair. What did he do to celebrate his 5'250 KM (3,250 mile) adventure? After a 5 day break, he began the next leg of his journey, a 2'200 KM (1,350mile) trek from Spain to Dusseldorf, Germany where he plans to arrive on 18 October 2006 in time for the Rehacare Disability Exhibition.

BRITISH COLUMBIA MOBILITY OPPORTUNITIES SOCIETY 2146 views CAN
When quadriplegic Sam Sullivan founded BCMOS in 1985, his goal was to make it possible for people with disabilities to access British Columbia's great outdoors. Sam wanted to surmount the barriers posed by the outdoor environment, thus making it possible for people to experience nature while participating in recreational activities. His dream led to the development of an ultralight-flying program, a disabled sailing program as well as various adventure expeditions such as Kayaking in Costa Rica. This was followed by the development of BCMOS Wilderness Access programs enabling an adapted, low-impact access into the backcountry.

NATURALLY ACCESSIBLE NSW 587 views AUST
Our research in NSW has shown that a new approach to accessible bushwalking is needed. We can help more people get outdoors and go bushwalking by providing them with information so they can make a decision if a walk is suitable for them. It’s about moving away from a system where people are told they are either welcome, or not, based on the use of a wheelchair symbol. It’s about returning a sense of exploration, adventure and choice to how visitors interact with, and spend time in nature. We wanted to do this in a way that is not just limited to wheelchair users, but rather, also takes into account the similar needs of other types of mobility restrictions including older people, young families with prams, people with heart/lung conditions and so on. Currently, this project focuses on bushwalking, but we have also shown that it works on improving access to hard-roofed accommodation in National Parks, and believe that the same concept could apply to improving access to other environments and experiences. So far, we’ve had a bunch of fun and had the opportunity to meet some really amazing people working in this space. Check out these posts below for more details.

BOMA 7 WHEELCHAIR 941 views UK
Put a quad bike, ATV, a mountain bike and a go-cart in a blender and the result would be the Boma 7. The chair was named after the 1980’s Raleigh Bomber bicycle and unlike some, this chair is a ‘No Compromise’ design that does not pretend to be a jack of all trades, it was designed specifically for serious off-road use and thats exactly where it excels – Using the Boma 7 chair is a very unique and exciting experience. If you are a conventional wheelchair user you can access the Boma seat by sliding transfer; simply remove the handlebar release, bring your chair right next to the seat and slide across. It is often easier getting into a Boma than into a car! Hoisted transfers can also be made quickly and easily as no frame obstructions. Once in the Boma you will feel very secure between the rear wheels, and the long low centre of gravity seating position is extremely comfortable. You will get a great feeling of being in the environment thanks to the open handlebars or joy stick setups. Riding in the local park, forest or on the beach, the feeling of freedom is truly exhilarating and we should also mention that NO chair attracts admiration and attention like the Boma!

GRIT FREEDOM CHAIR 750 views USA
When I lost the use of my legs, I thought I had also lost the wilderness in my life. With a concentrated effort of creativity and flexibility, along with a good dose of humility, I found my way back into camping again. After years of experimentation and adaptation, I finally found a set-up that works for me. Backpacking might no longer be possible (although I still haven't given up on the idea of wheelchair backpacking), but camping near a car was definitely feasible. Yes, I was returning to car-camping!

THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO ALL TERRAIN WHEELCHAIRS by GRIT 643 views
It's usually easy to find detailed information online comparing and contrasting big ticket items - like, say, a flat screen television or a mountain bike - but we’ve noticed that there’s not a lot of information out there like that for all terrain wheelchairs, so we decided to make our own. There are a lot of different kinds of all terrain wheelchairs out there, and because we truly believe that people of all abilities should have the opportunity to spend more time outdoors, we've tried to include a few options from every category. TRAILRIDER 6348 views CAN
In 2005 a new version of the TrailRider has been developed to meet several challenging criteria: lighter in weight, stronger and fully compactable for easy transport, and ergonomically adjustable for both hikers and Sherpas. Finally, it would feature a suspension system to ease the ride and a highly reliable disc brake system for increased safety. What emerged was the "Black Diamond" TrailRider model that is proving extremely popular. Hikers with disabilities are now using the Black Diamond across Canada and many are in use in the United States. An interesting feature of the Black Diamond TrailRider is a special "child insert" seat that can easily adjust to handle little people as well as adults.

JAIMEN HUDSON - 'THE VIEW IS BETTER FROM UP HERE!' website
I have always been passionate about the outdoors, as a youth my days were filled with activities like riding dirt bikes, skateboarding, surfing and scuba diving. Learning to dive at age 10 only added to my love of the ocean. In 2008 I had an accident that left me a quadriplegic and in 2014 I became interested in drone photography and videography, although I wasn't sure I would be able to use the remote controller due to my reduced hand function. Since then though I've been lucky to have my work featured in many prominent media outlets and publications and have also won the Western Australia 'Young Achiever Award' in 2018. I hope you enjoy what you see...!

LONELY PLANET ACCESSIBLE TRAVEL PHRASEBOOK website
All travellers will get more out of their trip by being able to speak a few words of the local language, but for people with a disability it’s often vital to be able to explain your particular needs. Since standard phrasebooks are unlikely to contain the language you need to talk about needs around disability we’ve gathered together some disability-specific words and phrases and translated them into as many different languages as we practically could. Although things are slowly changing for the better, there are still plenty of barriers to travel for people with a disability – language doesn’t have to be yet another.
