LEISURE AND OUTDOORS - SAILING
INDIVIDUALS ORGANISATIONS PRODUCTS SOCIAL MEDIA | "YOU can't miss me. I'm the one in the wheelchair!" Paralympic sailor Dan Fitzgibbon said when we planned to meet. At 31, the world champion racer is not what you'd expect of someone who lost the use of his legs and has only partial use of his arms after C5 spinal injury a decade ago. Sitting beside his new specially designed Skud 18 racing boat at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron at Manly, his larger-than-life appearance and flashing eyes are indeed unmistakable and he's a man who knows what he's talking about..."I can't drive a car, but I can sail - and the world is 70 per cent water!"

| The ABC TV 'AUSTRALIAN STORY' profile on Phil Vardy - his career and his journey into sailing... "One of the great thrills for me now is to see the other people getting a thrill out of sailing as well, especially in access dinghies, and there are now hundreds of these things all over Australia. At an access dinghy regatta, there's often not a dry eye in the place, and there are thousands of smiles".

| Part of the joy for Terry LeBlanc is working the entire experience by intuition as much as by mariner's skills. He merely needs to bite, breathe and think to sail his boat and gain an intense feeling of freedom on the waters of Vancouver's English Bay.
It's mostly due to the Sip 'n' Puff technology of the Martin 16 sailboat that LeBlanc uses. Sailors to chose either trimming the sails or directing the tiller, simply by biting the plastic straw. The interface of hardware and firmware allows even a high level quadriplegic to operate a sailboat. |
