Losing his ability to walk, he returned to college to pursue a career in mechanical engineering.Despite this new handicap, Dan returned to the thrill of flying within six months and since then his tenacity and adventurous spirit has allowed him to accrue more than 2,900 hours of flight time in Hang Gliders and Sailplanes. Completing his Private and Commercial Pilot License as a wheelchair user, his motorless recreational flights are typically 3-6 hours long, thermal soaring as high as 18,000 feet over the western deserts and mountains. |

| The Deaf Pilots Association welcomes you!
Hearing loss of any degree or even total deafness need not disqualify anyone from earning a pilot's certificate. From the beginning of aviation, deaf and hard of hearing people have flown airplanes solo in the United States, Canada and some other countries, and today some 100 to 120 of them are active pilots and aircraft owners. On this site you can see how they won their wings without having to use the radio, and, if you like, join them in the skies as members of the Deaf Pilots Association.

| About Flyability
What is Flyability?
Flyability is the disability initiative of the British Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association. The BHPA is the UK governing body of the sport of hang gliding and paragliding. We are a small group of volunteers that work in our spare time to make free flight accessible to anyone who wants to fly. |
| We provide the opportunity for those who are physically challenged to fly in specially adapted sailplanes, either as a passenger or as a member of the flight training program. |
| If the disabled person has good health and can counter their disability with quick reflexes or a suitable alternative control, they can probably fly. Flying does not require great strength, but does demand good headwork. Several hundred paraplegics, quadriplegics and amputees have successfully flown over the years and proven their abilities to the FAA and other controlling authorities throughout the world.? |
| Sky Sailing is the leader in handicapped training. We have installed special factory manufactured hand controls into the pride of our fleet, "Sailplane Magic". We have trained many para's and incomplete quads to experience the magic and the joy of soaring. |

| The Trust was founded with the objective of providing facilities to teach seriously physically disabled people to fly, giving them the opportunity to enjoy the freedom of the sky. Our purpose is to help people recover a belief in themselves and a degree of independence and confidence in their self-worth that enables them to face their difficulties and find a new challenge and purpose in their lives.
|
| Hands-only pilots need well co-ordinated and reasonably strong arms if they wish to take full control of the aircraft. But that doesn't of course mean that those with little or no strength in their hands cannot enjoy the challenge of flight, along with a safety pilot.
|
| The purpose of the organisation is to offer disabled people the opportunity to gain a flying experience. This allows disabled people to gain a sense of freedom and achievement - a stepping stone to use to further challenges. |

| The popularity of outdoor adventure sports is massive and continues growing at a fast clip. As an outdoor adventure sport enthusiast myself, I believe this popularity stems from being in the beauty of nature, combined with heightened experiences — flying through jungle canopies, tapping into the power of waves or white water rivers, soaring in the air like an eagle or free-falling while suspended a mile above the earth. In addition to the immediate “WOW!” factor, these experiences create a very positive and profound effect — adrenalin flowing, senses heightened. Emotional baggage vanishes and you enter a Zen state of being fully in the moment — something that stays with you and gives you a new perspective.
Intrigued? Here is a look at certain outdoor adventure sports that are fully accessible, even with very limited arm movement. You can try them without purchasing any additional gear. And you don’t have to be a superjock to do them. If they grab you, you can learn how to do them on your own. |
