| This Chair Yoga audio CD (or cassette tape) and 43 page pocket-sized tutorial booklet appeal to a wide audience - those who sit at desks or in cars, airplanes, or wheelchairs and want an afternoon "pick-me-up."
Chair Yoga benefits those who have a physical condition that requires them to exercise on a chair such as arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, osteoporosis, or stroke.
Chair Yoga is also an excellent form of Yoga and exercise for those who just do not want to get down on the floor yet desire the same results and benefits of traditional Yoga.

| Matthew Sanford teaches yoga to people of all abilities but he is a pioneer in adapting yoga for people living with disabilities. We all live on a continuum of abilities and disabilities he says. The principles of yoga apply to all people, to all bodies.
|
| Dr. Jane Murray, M.D. has this to say about the program:
"Yoga in Chairs is a wonderful way for people with physical limitations to experience the relaxation and increased flexibility that yoga brings. Many health benefits are seen with regular yoga practice, and now everyone can participate, even if they cannot get onto a floor mat."

| This web site is a resource for people who want to participate in yoga and for instructors, studios, gyms, facilities or organizations that want to establish an Inclusive Yoga class. | At Mind Body Solutions, we are redefining the fundamental nature of ability and disability. We are developing a mind-body approach for people living with disabilities and their caregivers. | Yoga is a gentle way to introduce movement and mindfulness in our busy lives. It not only is a great tool to develop physical wellness, but can also can help us develop the capacity to better manage daily stressors. Countless research studies have demonstrated effectiveness of yoga as an adjunct treatment for the management of high blood pressure, diabetes, and stress.
The beauty of yoga is that it is accessible to every individual, with minimal equipment needs, and can be practiced in the comfort of your own home. Somasense Yoga is designed to meet you where youre at. Classes are categorized based on positional demands so you can select ones that work for your individual needs. Remember that you are the expert in your own body. Nourish it with mindful movement and feel great at the end of the session. No experience required and everyone is welcome!

| Mathew Sanford teaches the ancient secrets of yoga, even though he can't do the most basic yoga moves. Forget about the downward facing dog. He can't do the dolphin, either, not without a lot of props. If you think yoga in terms of its physical new-agey pretzel logic, Sanford, who has paraplegia without much trunk stability, would be hopeless before the gods of gravity.
But yoga isn't just posing. It's about keeping the mind and body in the same frame, even if the body doesn't have all its functions. Sanford figured this out and has made it his life's work to spread the word.
|
| Using principles of adaptive yoga, viniyoga and yoga therapy, traditional yoga poses (asana) are adapted to match the needs of each individual participant. It is an all-encompassing practice that brings the benefits of yoga to you no matter what your physical limitations. Whilst this should be the case for all yoga classes - "adapted Yoga" is a term primarily used in the UK and US to make it very clear to the participant that the practice is adapted to meet your body's needs.
|
| When Matthew Sanford was just thirteen, his families car skidded off an overpass on an icy Iowa road killing his father and sister, paralyzing him from the chest down, and changing his life forever. Years later, yoga would dramatically change it again. In 'WAKING: A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence' Matthew chronicles his journey from the intensive care unit to becoming a paralyzed yoga teacher and founder of a nonprofit organization. |
