HEALTH AND WELLBEING - FITNESS & EXERCISE
INDIVIDUALS ORGANISATIONS PRODUCTS SOCIAL MEDIA | My name is Colt Wynn. When I was 14 years old I was paralysed in a hunting accident. I knew I had to lift weights harder and more consistently than ever before. I knew it would make life a lot easier in a wheelchair. |
| In October 2006, I had an accident which resulted in a Spinal Injury, leaving me in a wheelchair. After 6 months in rehab I returned home. Unable to return to my job, I teetered on the verge of isolation and depression, sat at home whilst life went on as normal around me.
Eventually, I summoned up the courage to return to the Gym. I had to work out how to train again, but enjoyed being there and started seeing the physical results of my hard work. Next, a friend of mine presented me with a challenge -to train for a Guest Spot at his 2009 show. With a target to aim for and the help of family and friends, I got focussed and started to train - full on!

| At 21, most young people are just beginning life, but for me, my life almost ended and was certainly changed forever. Along with furthering my education and starting a new and promising career, I got involved in the growing sport of wheelchair bodybuilding in 2001. I began competing at the national level in 2002. Each year I was getting bigger and better. Things were really starting to turn around. My job was going great and I was actually enjoying my life even though I was paralyzed.

| "Progressive resistive exercise (PRE) has been used in rehabilitation and fitness programs for years to develop the muscular strength and endurance of people with various types of physical disabilities. PRE is based on the overload principle that says to improve a parameter of fitness (e.g., muscular strength, muscular endurance, or cardiovascular endurance), you must stress the system beyond what it is accustomed to. While simple enough in theory, applying this to individuals with different disabilities potentially warrants exercise modifications. Read Drs. Peter M. Aufsesser and Peggy Lasko-McCarthey's article about how to create just such a program for yourself". |
