| Judy Sharp is a struggling single mother to teenagers, Tim and Sam, and they've come a long way from when she was told by doctors to put three-year-old Tim away in an institution and to forget about him. Tim's autistic, and today he communicates largely through his quirky drawings of 'Laser Beak Man", a down-to-earth superhero character of his own creation. Tim's Laser Beak Man was one of 200 works from around the world selected by jury for exhibition in the International VSA arts Festival in Washington DC. Jean Kennedy Smith, founder of the VSA arts Festival and sister of President John F. Kennedy, says Tim's work is a funny and that his good sense of humour comes through in the adventures of Laser Beak Man.

| Tom, a talented musician, was a happy healthy nineteen year old uni student in 2001 when he started to feel unwell with classic symptoms of a cold. He went to bed to shake it off but when he woke up in the morning he could scarcely move and had to crawl to the door to let his sister in.
He was immediately admitted to hospital and diagnosed with meningococcal disease. He went into a coma, had two heart attacks, kidney failure and then gangrene in all four limbs. Doctors did not expect him to live.

| Transverse Myelitis is a rare neurological disorder that is part of a spectrum of neuroimmunologic diseases of the central nervous system. Other disorders in this spectrum include, Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM), Optic Neuritis, and Neuromyelitis Optica (Devic's disease). The membership of The Transverse Myelitis Association includes persons with all of these disorders, their family members and caregivers and the medical professionals who treat people with these disorders. |
