| On June 26, 1985, while driving to a gig, Beaver was in an accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury, leaving him paralyzed from the mid-chest down. Ironically, at this time, Beaver’s career was about to rise dramatically. Just prior to the accident, Guitar Player magazine had chosen to feature Beaver in Mike Varney’s 'Spotlight' column. Beaver is well known as the Owner and Founder of Bass Central, a music instrument store specializing in high-end equipment for bass players. The store is considered the #1 store of its type in the world. |
| Chazz Demeyer A disabled musician (spinal chord) for over thirty years, and for the life of me I do not know why it took so many years to seek others in a similar condition. After all this time I have finally gotten around to writing and singing about it. I have a new CD (Recovery) and a new book (The Fire Within) recently released. |
| The book, The Fire Within, and the album, Recovery, tell deMeyer's remarkable story in words and music. They chronicle his early days as a traveling musician, his intensive effort to recover from the accident, his marriage to Elle (who first came into his life as an occupational therapist at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago) and his struggles and triumphs in the world of business as he turned away from music and put his creative fire to work in different venues.
Recovery and The Fire Within mark deMeyer's return as a serious musician and songwriter 30 years after the accident, and his debut as an author. Each work stands on its own, but taken together they weave an inspiring story of refusal to let the physical impact of the accident (he never regained full use of his left side) limit deMeyer's growth as a person and musician.

| Hard work and determination led a young boy affected by debilitating Arthrogryposis to fight tirelessly to become a highly successful… drummer! David recalls stopping in the schkool band room one day, where he was intrigued by, “…these far-out woodwind instruments.” Soon after, he went to visit a friend, who had a snare drum and cymbal set up in his house. David attempted the intro of U2’s, “Sunday, Bloody Sunday”, and was immediately hooked. Without dwelling on his capsized dreams of becoming a pro tennis player, he thought to himself, “This is something I want to do really badly!” |

Mark has been recognized for his work internationally and was nominated for an Emmy award in 1998 for his principal role in the Fox Network commercial, 'Feet'?. Music was a big part of Mark's family and he remembers being deeply touched by it at a very early age. By age nine, Mark was attempting to create his own music, but choosing an instrument would prove to be a challenge.
Mark asked his neighborhood friend for some guitar instruction. With his friend's help Mark soon developed his own technique. He would lay the guitar on the ground, supporting the neck and he would strum with his left foot and make chords with his right.
By early adulthood, Mark was committed to a full-fledged career in music and by the end of the nineties Mark had successfully completed his first CD, titled "Big Toe"?.

The singer was hit by an SUV while riding her bicycle. Her injuries left her unable to sit up for more than 10 minutes. She suffered short-term memory loss and acute sensitivity to light and sound. Gardot had played the piano and a doctor suggested that she use music as a kind of recovery therapy. Since she couldn't sit comfortably at the piano, she picked up a guitar. | Tom, a talented musician, was a happy healthy nineteen year old uni student in 2001 when he started to feel unwell with classic symptoms of a cold. He went to bed to shake it off but when he woke up in the morning he could scarcely move and had to crawl to the door to let his sister in.
He was immediately admitted to hospital and diagnosed with meningococcal disease. He went into a coma, had two heart attacks, kidney failure and then gangrene in all four limbs. Doctors did not expect him to live.
Tom pulled through - one of the most severe cases ever to survive. Read more of the interview transcript from the ABC TV Australian Story website...

| "Although a motorcycle accident briefly sidelined Marcus Culvert, he's made a strong comeback as entrepreneur - with his own clothing line-, a musician and drag racer. Perhaps there is nothing in a healthy person's life that could prepare him or her for an adulthood wracked by intense pain and heart-wrenching disability. Religious faith can help. Loving parents, family, and friends can cushion such a blow. But when all is said and done, a young man who lives hard and fast until he loses the use of his legs is left to figure out how to greet each day and get the most out of it". |
| Seven years ago Tim McCallum was accepted into the prestigious Academy of Performing Arts in Western Australia. It was the culmination of a childhood dream.
But three days after arriving in WA to start his studies, Tim McCallum broke his neck in an accident in the surf. He was left paralysed from the chest down with only partial use of his arms. It seemed there was no realistic prospect of him ever being able to sing again.
But Derek Bond, a lecturer from the Academy visited Tim in hospital every second day and encouraged him to continue music studies and to try to use his voice again. "Anyone who sings knows the support you have to get from the diaphragm and if you haven't got all those muscles working there for you then you have to work in another way"? says Bond. At first it was a struggle, but gradually and remarkably the power in Tim McCallum's voice returned.
